Well, what's a modern everyday bag? It's a Coach Brooklyn Shoulder Bag, or a Goyard tote bag. Hermès and Louis Vuitton have helped tremendously in popularizing what we know as the everyday bag.
Hermès created the Kelly bag as a smaller and more structured iteration of the horseback riding carryall named the HAC bag. It was intended for ladies' and Grace Kelly(the American actress) fell in love with the bag.
The Louis Vuitton Noé bucket bag was originally used to safely carry bottles of champagne, and through the years the bag shifted more towards being for fashion.
Although you can argue that they were the first, it doesn't change the fact that they were designs that stood the test of time, proving how big everyday bags are nowadays.

Brands continue creating around this idea of the everyday bag; presenting collections based on their latest innovations in style and design. The fun thing about secondhand is you have more options. You can shop from brands and designers you haven't looked at before. Sometimes you can be more spontaneous, or more deliberate.
A good starting point could be knowing what you like about the bag. You can start with color(or color palette). What sort of balance are you trying to create in a look? I love reaching for a black bag because I feel like it ties my looks together since I wear black often. But I also understand that there are people out there that enjoy colorful accessories more than I do. I also change the main focus of my outfit from time to time, but as an everyday bag it's something I will wear 90% of the time.
When I think of the modern everyday bag, I think it's something comfortable, but exciting. Ideally, it's a bag you can wear with anything you'd like and bring wherever you'd like. Your bag can be a part of your everyday ritual. Would you take your bag to go to work, run errands, or leave town for the day? The size you want also matters. How much stuff do you need on you?
Do you like the way the bag was constructed? Do the materials the design uses make sense? Can it safely hold up?
